Summer is coming, and everyone gets to relax for a bit. So, we wanted to help with that. We're recommending reads that would be good on the beach, by the pool, in the hammock, in a sleeping bag, and everywhere else you just want to unwind.
During the dog days summer, walk in the shoes of a loyal family canine to a race car driver, his wife, and his daughter. This book is about three sisters who get dumped at the same time and how they all deal with their situations. Perfect chick lit book to read while sunbathing.– Missy Randen, Student Financial Services
Circe is a modern retelling about the Greek myth of a girl who grows up living with the Titans, but is sent to a deserted island to live forever by herself. The writing style is beautifully descriptive and the characters are well-rounded. – Abby, Class of '19
I would recommend this novel as a good summer read. The novel, published in 1917, chronicles the life of a ‘man of the land’ and is epic in its scope. Hamsun is a Norwegian writer. – John Baken, Kent Library
This work, which follows the murder and the subsequent murder investigation of a family in Kansas, was one of the first works of narrative journalism. It's a classic. And it's a classically "trashy" true-crime thriller read! So you can feel a little high-brow while really getting some lower-brow entertainment. – Sarah Cavanah, Mass Media
It's a coming-of-age story filled with funny, happy, and cute moments, but also sad and gripping ones. I especially reccomend this for anyone involved with the LGBTQ community, but I'm sure anyone who loves a mushy story about family will love it. – Abby, Class of '19
Some comics are complex. Dark. Brooding. Covering dozens of issues with references back to previous comics you definitely didn't read. Not beach material. Then there's The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Doreen, said Squirrel Girl, fights crime with puns, random computer science facts, lots of squirrels, and the power of listening. She gets assists from Tippy-Toe the squirrel, her roommate Nancy, and a group of superfriends with rhyming animal names including Koi Boy & Chipmunk Hunk. Funny, friendly, compassionate, and with storylines that are usually just an issue or two, this is the comic you should be taking to the beach. – Carl Hess, Kent Library
Murder mystery, romance, and social acceptance, all set near water, makes for a very engaging and interesting read to be enjoyed in the sunshine. – Marlee Russell, Class of '19
