In 1951, Christopher Strachey successfully ran his version of the game we know as checkers on the Ferranti Mark I computer (seen below) at the University of Manchester, England.

The first AI program to run in the United States was also a checkers program, written in 1952 by Arthur Samuel for the IBM 701 computer.
