Web sites with e-books

Bartleby.com  -- has e-books in various formats, content similar to Gutenberg below

Project Gutenberg -- started in 1971, this collective volunteer effort offers public domain texts transcribed from originals - either typed in by hand or scanned and proofread.

Internet Archive -- books and other texts such as government publications in electronic format

Sites with books and data about books

Google books - searchable content of millions of books - many are available to view/download, and even if a book is under copyright, it's a useful tool for locating a word or phrase inside a book.

Hathi Trust   Academic initiative similar to Google books (using a lot of the same book sources), but with a focus more on preservation and scholarly use

Ngram viewer (Google) track how often words appear over time in books digitized into the google books database, for example, here is a chart of the use of the word 'automobile' beteen the years 1800 and 2000
