The way to find books and ebooks available to Southeast students is to use the Kent Library Catalog.
You can start your search on the library website, library.semo.edu, by typing in your search term in the main search box. This will take you to a results page where you can use several tools to narrow and specify your results.
After you search, you will be taken to the results page. At the top, you will be able to change your search. This includes the "modify search" link which lets you change your search in Advanced Search, the "limit to available items" checkbox that removes checked out items from the results, as well as the ability to change how your results are sorted.
By default, your results will be sorted by relevance, so that books with your keywords in the title come first, then those with the keywords in the subtitle, and finally results with your keywords in the chapter titles, summaries, or subject headings. You can also switch your results to show by date (newest first) and alphabetically by title.
Each item in the record page will have:
Clicking the title of the book will take you to its record page, which provides more information about the book, including a subject description and often the table of contents and a summary.
Links to ebooks are always located on the record page.
When you find a book in the catalog, you can request that the library picks the book off of the shelf and hold it for you at the front desk.
There is a "Request" link located below the title and publication information in the search results. There is also a "Request" link at the top of each record page.
To request the book, you will need to enter your name as well as the S0 number on your student ID.
You can also use this feature to send a book to any of the regional campuses.
We will send you an email when your book is ready to pick up.
In addition to our collection, you have access to books from MOBIUS, a large group libraries from Missouri and neighboring states. You are able to have books and other materials from those libraries sent to Kent Library or the regional campuses, where you can check them out.
On the results page, there is a "Search MOBIUS" link about your search terms. When you click, it will run the same search in the MOBIUS catalog.
The "Search MOBIUS" link will also appear on the record page for a book. It will look for that book in other MOBIUS libraries, which is useful if our copy is checked out.
When you request a book from MOBIUS, it will require your name and S0 number like requesting books in the Kent Library Catalog. It will also ask you to select your MOBIUS cluster (MOBIUS - Southeast Missouri State University).
Books from MOBIUS will usually arrive in 2 to 5 business days, depending on how far they have to travel. We will send you an email when your book is ready to pick up.
Every book in the library has been tagged with subject headings that describe broadly what it is about. When you find one book, you can use its subject heading(s) to find books on similar topics.
To see a book's subject headings, click its title in the results list to bring up the record page. The list of subjects is located towards the bottom of the record, labeled "LC Subject."
Clicking the subject heading will bring a list of links showing that subject heading as well as similar subject headings. Click any one of them to find what we have on that subject.
Kent Library's books are organized on the shelf by the Dewey Decimal System*. The first few numbers in the call number represent a subject that describes what the book is about. As a result, book you find in the catalog is shelved next to books on similar topics.
When you go to pick up a book, you can often find more sources by looking around it on the shelf. You can also look at books next to a book you have found using the catalog. Next to its call number, you will see a link that says "Browse nearby." Clicking it will show books with similar call numbers.
* Starting summer 2018, the library collection is being changed to Library of Congress (LC) call numbers, starting with all new books. Browsing with call numbers in the LC section will work the same as Dewey, just with different numbers.
